CLC Accomplishments
Over the past fourteen years, through the CLC, more than 300 lawyers have:
●helped more than 13,000 deserving clients solve a variety of problems free of charge
● screened more than 24,000 phone calls
● organized more than 400 clinics
● seen more than 17,000 clients at our clinics
● referred more than 5,200 people to other legal services
● referred at least 1,800 people to other social service agencies
The CLC has helped thousands of Memphians with civil cases, including family law matters, landlord-tenant disputes, consumer law cases, estate and probate issues, elder law, and immigration. The CLC has also presented educational seminars at or through numerous social service agencies on topics such as “How to Buy a Used Car,” “Living with Your Landlord,” and “The Basics of Family Law.” In 2007 alone, the CLC fielded more than 4,400 calls, met with 143 clients at bi-monthly clinics, and formally represented at least 245 Memphians with legal problems.
The CLC does not handle criminal matters, bankruptcy, worker’s compensation, personal injury cases or any other matters that generate attorneys’ fees. The CLC has worked closely over the years with Memphis Area Legal Services, the University of Memphis’ Cecil C. Humphreys School of law, and with MIFA, which provides the CLC office space at its headquarters on Vance Avenue.
The Community Legal Center maintains a list of more than 250 local attorneys who have volunteered to take pro bono cases. We have also partnered with the Administrative Office of the Courts, MALS, the University of Memphis, and the Memphis Bar Association to form the Shelby County Pro Se Legal Clinic, staffed by a part-time staff attorney under the direction of the CLC to represe |
